Is It Possible to Go Abroad with a Rental Car?

The idea of going abroad with a rental car is a subject of curiosity for many people making travel plans. However, within the framework of general sectoral practices and legal procedures in Turkey, this situation is bound by very strict rules. In most cases, it is not possible to take a car rented from Turkey outside the country's borders.

Rules for Vehicles Rented from Turkey

A vast majority of car rental companies within Turkey do not allow their vehicles to be taken outside the national borders. The main reasons for this restriction are:

  • Legal and Operational Risks: The ownership of the vehicle belongs to the company, and legal processes or accident situations that may be encountered abroad contain risks that are difficult for companies to manage.

  • Insurance Invalidity: Standard rental insurances and casco policies are valid only within the borders of Turkey. Crossing the border immediately invalidates all of the vehicle's guarantees.

  • GPS Tracking: Modern rental cars are monitored with GPS systems; when it is detected that the vehicle is approaching or crossing the border, this is considered a breach of contract, and legal action may be initiated.

Exceptional Circumstances and Required Documents

Some corporate and global rental firms may grant permission to go abroad based on special requests and under certain conditions. If the firm gives approval, it is mandatory to prepare the following documents:

  • Notarized Power of Attorney: An official document showing that the company has authorized you to take the vehicle abroad is required.

  • Green Card Insurance: This is an internationally valid insurance document that ensures the vehicle is also covered by insurance abroad.

  • International Driving Permit: Although new-type chipped driver's licenses are accepted in most countries, some countries may request an international license obtained through TURING.

  • Written Permission Document: In addition to the rental agreement, an approved document explicitly stating the permission to go abroad.

Alternative: Renting a Car Abroad

Due to the difficulty and cost of taking a vehicle out of Turkey, the most practical solution is to rent a car in the country you are visiting.

  • Global Reservation: Through global firms like Avis or SIXT, you can make a reservation for your destination country while still in Turkey and pick up your vehicle as soon as you step off your plane.

  • Schengen Area Advantage: It is generally much easier to cross into other Schengen countries with a car rented from one country within Europe, provided the firm gives permission.

Important Warning: Be sure to inquire about the "Cross-Border" policy before renting. Unauthorized border crossings lead to heavy punitive fees and being left outside of insurance coverage.
